PE MYTHS & FACTS

If an inability to delay ejaculation is affecting the sexual health of your relationship, you may be a good candidate for premature ejaculation therapy MYTH:: Ejaculation is not something that you can control.

FACT: Actually, Ejaculation is something that you can control. You can learn to control your ejaculation in the same way that we all learn bladder control (Toilet Training) when we are children. Like bladder control, once you learn to control your ejaculation, you are unlikely to forget.

MYTH:: Premature Ejaculation is a problem that is entirely in your head.

FACT: Most patients with premature ejaculation actually have an oversensitive glans penis or head of the penis. It is mostly through stimulation of the head of the penis that we ejaculate. Men with an oversensitive head of the penis will ejaculate with very little stimulation. They have what is called a low ejaculatory threshold.

MYTH:: Alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and antidepressants are good ways to control premature ejaculation.

FACT: None of these drugs are meant to be taken to control premature ejaculation. One of the side-effects of these drugs is the inhibition of ejaculation. However, other serious side-effects must be taken into account. Here’s the reality: substance abuse causes erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, inability to orgasm, and other side effects. Antidepressants should not be taken lightly and should be taken only under strict medical care.

MYTH:: Anesthetic sprays or creams available from sex shops are good ways to control PE.

FACT: These products rarely, if ever, work. They numb the head of the penis as well as the partner’s vagina, reducing pleasure for both partners. As they numb the head of the penis, you never actually "get used" to the sensation of making love for longer periods of time, and the problem returns as soon as you stop using them..

MYTH:: Premature ejaculation will not eventually cause erection problems.

FACT: More patients who have suffered from PE for a long time eventually develop erection problems than those who can actually control their ejaculation.

MYTH:: Premature ejaculation is not a sign that there may be an erection problem developing.

FACT: Premature ejaculation can be the first sign of an erection problem.

MYTH:: Premature Ejaculation will not affect your sex life.

FACT: While you are making love, you are often worried that ejaculation may occur. This makes it difficult to relax and enjoy the experience. Also, your partner may not be getting the most out of her sex life, and may avoid lovemaking for this very reason.

MYTH:: Premature ejaculation will not affect your confidence and ability to socialize in everyday life.

FACT: Any problem that affects your self-image can have a negative impact on your confidence and ability to socialize. Men who learn to control their ejaculation often become more confident and more outgoing.
